Confessing Christ – Mat 10:32-33

“32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.”

In 1885, the first martyrs in Uganda, Africa, were three Christian boys. The oldest was fifteen and the youngest was eleven-year-old Yusufu. The king had ordered their arrest in an effort to stamp out Christianity. Despite the weeping of the people and the pleading of their parents, they held fast to their faith and staked their lives on it.

At the place of execution, the boys sent a message to the king: “Tell his majesty that he has put our bodies in the fire, but we won’t be long in the fire; soon we shall be with Jesus, which is much better. But ask him to repent and change his mind, or he will land in a place of unquenchable eternal fire.” They sang a song, now known as the martyr’s song, one verse of which says, “O that I had wings like the angels, I would fly away and be with Jesus.” Forty adults, seeing this supernatural boldness, peace, and faith, came to Jesus the day the boys died. This was a new kind of life that fire and torture could not control. In two years, Christianity grew in that country, though many more had to die. These youngsters are remembered as the first Christian martyrs of Uganda. They were only beginners and knew little theology, but they had fallen in love with Jesus Christ. Life had taken on a completely new meaning. When they weighed the value of temporal life against eternal life, they were not clinging to their trail-filled lives, but ready to give them up for Jesus. That kind of story—of unashamed confession—goes on and on throughout the history of the church.

Today we will be looking at verses 32 and 33. These are very weighty and important verses in our day of superficial Christianity. There are millions calling themselves disciples, but in this passage, the Lord lays down hallmarks of true disciples. Verse 32 states that the one who confesses Christ without any fear of men, without shame, in every circumstance—no matter how hostile the situation, even at the risk of his life—marks a true disciple. On the other hand, in verse 33, one who denies Christ before men, marks one who is a false disciple who will put on a Christian show but will perish eternally and be denied before God.

These are important verses that call us to examine ourselves. Two pictures are drawn before us. It is a message that says, “Look at yourself. In your life and confrontation with the world, are you confessing Christ or are you denying Him? For your eternal destiny depends on that.”

We will understand these two verses with four questions:

  1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO “CONFESS” JESUS BEFORE MEN?
  2. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO “DENY” JESUS BEFORE MEN?
  3. WHAT IS THE CONSEQUENCE IN ETERNITY OF THE STAND WE TAKE ON EARTH?
  4. WHAT CAN WE DO IF WE HAVE NOT CONFESSED AND STOOD FOR HIM AS WE SHOULD?

1. What Does It Mean to “Confess” Jesus Before Men? (v. 32)

“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.”

The word “Therefore” is key. We must understand the context. Verses 24 to 42 form a great section on discipleship, a summation of all of our Lord’s teaching on the subject. The basic meaning of a true disciple (v. 24) is someone whose life goal is becoming more and more like Christ. This is the great purpose of God in our salvation and providence. To be a true disciple, the Lord outlines five hallmarks.

The first thing that hinders us as a disciple from being like our Lord is the fear of men. The Lord removes that fear with three reasons, which can be summarized as Promise, Power, and Protection:

  1. Promise: The truth will be vindicated (v. 26).
  2. Power: Fear God’s power more than man’s power, which can only kill the body (v. 28).
  3. Protection: God’s providential care extends like a great invisible hand over the true disciple (v. 29-31).

Therefore, do not fear men and close your mouth. If you grasp these great reasons not to fear men—if you have the right doctrine of God and right priorities in life—you will not just not fear men, but you will be anxious to confess Jesus as your Lord before men, no matter how hostile they might be. You will get into the spirit of Paul and shout in triumph: “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, because I know it’s the power of God unto salvation.”

The second hallmark, a natural consequence, is that a true disciple will never be ashamed to confess the Lord, whatever the risk.

The Meaning of “Confess”

Observe the word. It is not “profess,” but “confess” (homologeō).

  • Professing Christ is easy, done in comfortable, favorable, and beneficial circumstances.
  • Confessing Christ implies that the circumstances make that confession a deed of courage, exposing the confessing soul to peril and penalty. The person accepts the suffering or shame and confesses what may seem foolish to others is wise to him.

The Greek word homologeō means “to say the same thing”—openly, willingly, and publicly declaring our relationship to Jesus Christ. We tell the truth about Him boldly and confess Him before men. It is the confession of being “in with Christ.” “There are two sides, sirs. You ask me which I take—I confess that I am in with Christ for the battle of life. I am His disciple. I believe all He says.”

When the situation is very much against Christ and us—when we are put on the spot and questioned, and we know that if we confess Christ, we may face trouble—will we confess Him or shy away? God calls us to faithfully confess Him before men when the call comes to do so.

The Ways We Confess Christ

God calls upon us to confess Jesus Christ before men in a multitude of ways:

1. Confession for Salvation (Romans 10:9-10): We are saved by confessing. “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, having believed in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

2. Confession by Obedience (Baptism): A true convert must confess Christ by obeying His command to be baptized and join a church. This is the outward confession of an inward change—a desire to be buried with Christ, rise with Christ, and live as a new creature wholly for Him. To refuse baptism is to deny Christ.

3. Confession by Witness and Defense: We must be eager to share with everyone what He has done and tell about His gospel truth at every opportunity. “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you…” (1 Peter 3:15). When someone asks why we have hope, joy, or are able to bear up under struggles, we are to tell them about Him. We’re to let them know that He is our Lord and Savior, the reason for our joy, and our guide whose word we follow.

4. Confession on Public Platforms: “Whosoever, therefore, shall confess Me before men” emphasizes the public character of the confession. Whenever we get a platform and the attention of the public (at a function, work event, or public platform), are we eager to share the message of our Lord and our relationship with Him? We must use all such platforms to confess that we are His disciples. Sadly, many Christians put on a big show in church but never talk about the Lord when they get opportunities in the world.

5. Confession by Defending Biblical Truth: We confess Christ when we are called upon to faithfully defend the biblical truth about Him. When we hear someone saying something about Jesus that is not true, or holding to unbiblical speculations, or denying the truth, we confess Him by saying, “No. What you say about Him is not true. Here’s what the Bible says about Him…” We “say the same thing” about Jesus that the apostles recorded in Scripture.

6. Confession by Obedience and Moral Stand (Action): We confess Jesus not with our words alone, but with our actions. “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things I say?” (Luke 6:46). When we obey Him, we are confessing Him as Lord through our obedience, which often speaks louder than words. We confess Him when we take a moral stand as a result of our submission to Him—when everyone else is lying, sinning, and following the trend, we stand alone as His followers.

7. Confession by Willing Suffering: We confess Him when we willingly suffer for the gospel and accept the shame of His cross. The message of the cross is “foolishness to those who are perishing,” but we proclaim that message boldly because “to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18).

Our confession is to be with our words and with our whole life and heart attitude. Whether you’re standing in front of an agreeing group, a neutral group, or an utterly hostile group, a true Christian confesses. Confession must be public and genuine, and its genuineness is marked by our willingness to affirm and acknowledge that we belong to Christ, no matter how hostile the elements around us. If we are some kind of secret Christian not willing to speak about our relationship with God, our salvation is questionable.

In First John 4:15, it says, “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwells in him, and he in God.” How do you know a true Christian? He’s one who confesses Jesus as the Son of God, with his mouth and with his life. That is the mark of a true disciple. True disciples confess the Lord in the face of any hostility at all. This is a good place for us to examine ourselves. If we find ourselves ashamed often to speak of Christ in our family or here and there, we had better examine our heart to see if we are really genuine. If we are not confessing, that is dangerous because then we are denying Him. Let us look at what it means to deny Him.

2. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO “DENY” JESUS BEFORE MEN?

To “deny” (arneomai) Jesus before men, as the word is used in this passage, means to disclaim

our association with Him. It means that we know in our hearts that He has full claim to us, and that we belong to Him; and yet deny before men that He has any influence upon us, and convey the impression that we don’t really belong to Him. I suppose an easy way of defining this is to say that we “deny” Him before men every time we have an opportunity to “confess” Him before men but refuse to do so.

What is it that might tempt us to deny Jesus before men? Isn’t it the fear of men…That is what Lord dealt .. He said, “Do not fear them” (v. 26). There are several ways that the fear of men may cause us to “clam up” and deny Him. in the face of opposition, and that the denial is a cowardly attempt to save one’s skin at the cost of treason to Jesus

We all have done that.. and do that.. it is very shameful thing.. but we do that… ask your conscience … Let us honestly see… why we deny… we fear men.. because they react violent and angry response from those who might reject the gospel. They may attack or do something… but not very often.. maybe rare… rarely someone may physically attack us for speaking to them about Jesus. The type of persecution that we’re more likely to receive in our culture is of a social nature.. they may insult us.. talk back rudely.. avoid us…. . So, we may be tempted to deny the Lord before men out of a fear of open ridicule and scorn for our relationship to Him. We all hate being laughed at, or made fun of, or made the butt of jokes. But Our Lord warned us that this would happen. He told us that, if they called Him horrible names, they will call us names too (vv, 24-25). He said that is the sign you are becoming like me… but we don’t like that.. honestly… I don’t want to be laughed at.. and made fun of…. Comedy…

We may also be tempted to deny the Lord before men because of a fear that we will be misunderstood or misrepresented…. Why is he talking to me.. about Jesus.. does he want money… does he have some plan to spoil me… People are very quick to misconstrue what they don’t want to accept. We might fear that, if we confess Jesus before men, we will be made out to be something we’re not – such as religious freaks or fanatical kooks. We might fear being associated with certain movements… they shouldn’t think we are Pentecostals… .

Another fear that may tempt us to deny our Lord before men is the fear of being thought of as “old-fashioned” or “out of step”. This is usually a very polite form of ridicule – something that you receive on a college campus or in a public forum. You mention the Lord, and you receive a smile and a little roll of the eyes. You’ll be thought ‘quaint old man’; and will be politely reminded which ‘century’ this is. …. We are living computers beyond… artificial intelligence.. robotics.. who will believe all this… This is not relevant … outdated. And if matters of faith are considered by our culture to no longer be ‘relevant’, then we might feel tempted to be silent about the Lord of eternity.

Not only by what we say or don’t say… You could also deny Him by your actions, you say you’re a Christian and believe Christ.. and then just live the way everybody else lives and disobey Christ commands.. you’re denying Christ.

When so much problems we face.. insult, jokes.. think we are mental.. old fashioned.. why confess him… respectfully live and be silent… You could deny the Lord by silence, did you know that? You could deny the Lord by just not saying anything.  You could deny Him by absolute silence, just don’t say anything. You cannot be like that because of eternal consequence of that action….

When you understand eternal consequence of your confession or denial.. that will help us to overcome all these fears…May God help us to do that…

3. WHAT IS THE CONSEQUENCE IN ETERNITY OF THE STAND WE TAKE ON EARTH?

* * * * * * * * * *

So; when we’re called upon to confess our Lord, how do we overcome the fear of men that may tempt us to deny Him? I suggest that the answer is found in what Jesus says about Himself in this passage….. We can overcome that fear only when have that eternal perspective…….and understand and believe how glorious gloriously majestic Christ is…. That Christ gives a promise and warning in the same verses .. and tells us our confession or denial about him will have an eternal consequence….

Notice the first promise He makes. Whoever confesses Him before men, He will confess before His Father who is in heaven. .

The reward and punishment of confession and denial come to them not as separate acts, but as each being the revelation of the spiritual condition of the doers. Christ implies that a true disciple cannot but be a confessor, and that therefore the denier must certainly be one whom He has never known. Because, therefore, each act is symptomatic of the doer, each receives the congruous and correspondent reward. The confessor is confessed; the denier is denied

We can overcome that fear only when have that eternal perspective…….and know how glorious gloriously majestic Christ is…. Today many may be ashamed to confess.. may seem odd and old fashioned.. There will be a day…… I suggest to you that it doesn’t matter what we may suffer on this earth. It will never matter what men may do to us. … whatever jokes they may hve done on us.. all that will be a dream…. All that will be mirage… all that will vanity….what really matters…

Only reality will be that great day one will decide eternity destiny விதி of every man… I think I see the Master. He has come in the clouds of heaven with all glory. Listen how the silver trumpets ring! The dead are rising; ; stars are falling; sun and moon dark, heaven and earth will vanish from his presence… solemnities, unseen before, all nations will gathered before him… attend the dread நியாய சபை assize court and the books are opened and every soul destiny may be judged by this one thing—did he confess Christ before men?

You know why… because in that day the most glorious majestic authority filled person is Jesus Christ… nobody is greater than Christ who will decide the destiny of every man.. What he says will decide destiny of every man.. because he is so great… how glorious when he looks at you and me says.. “Then I confess that he is Mine and though he were not famous, poor and despised, He confessed Me. I confess him

When all the men eternally will have to suffer the wrath of God .. without intermission, into

unquenchebale fire, forever… beat their breasts and cry to rocks and moutains to fall on them… Jesus Christ to say Father…He is mine… I have suffered on his behalf and have born all his sins..and have satisfied your justice and paid all his debts… and he by his true faith is united to me…and has manifested his faith by truly confessing me before men in spite of all men’s opposition, hate, and insults… He is one with me.. I am united to him….I have atoned for his sins… I have put my righteousness on him…. and paid all his dues to your law and justice.. He belongs to me…. He is mine… all that belongs to me.. you have to give him…he will be in the glory where I am.. sitting with me on the throne.. inheriting all the eternal inheritance.. he is my co-heir…

No experience of suffering upon this earth will ever come close to the glory, and the thrill, and the eternal joy, of having Jesus Christ claim us as His own on that great day of judgment! We will never regret any suffering or shame before men; so long as we will be able to hear the Lord of glorious look upon us in response to our faithfulness, turn to His Father – and before the holy angels – before all universe… and say, “I confess this one to be Mine, Father. Before all of heaven, and entire universe…. I testify that this one belongs to Me; and that I will claim this one to Myself forever!”

What a thrilling promise…… when we think of that promise.. no suffering is great… what are the insults of men… whatever they may think… will I be ashamed to talk my Lord.. in any forum.. yesterday… John’s birthday.. called all small children around… generally I will be sensitive…what parents may say… but full fledged told him.. they are born sinners.. they need to born again.. Only Jesus Christ sacrifice can save them… . That is a glorious

That is promise…

There is also a terrible warning….

But He also says that whoever denies Him before men, He will deny before His Father in heaven. Think of that! Can you think of any greater horror than to stand before the Son in that day when he is only hope.. and his words will seal our eternal destiny… and have Him deny you before the Father? In that great day… Can you think of a greater horror than for Him to point to you and say, “Father, I deny knowing this one”? He is the only Savior, and that only Savior does not know them…..you go and experience eternal wrath for your sins…

Worldly lady she was ashamed to confess Christ before her respectful friends… they will think bad.. he will say I never know you… He will not know her in that day when the beauty will have gone from her cheeks and the grace and charm will have departed from her form. Yes, that man of business who was talking the other day with his fellows, and the conversation turning upon religion, there was some joke made against the gospel, or some of its sacred doctrines—and though he knew it was wrong and mean, he thought he must joke, too, unless he should be thought to be one of the class who follow Jesus of Nazareth! He was too respectable to know Christ, and Christ will be too respectable to know him!

Let me say to all the respectable people of this world… who admired and respected by world and given padma bushan… padma shri.. Nobel Prize. all honor and all kings, ministers, chief ministers, prime ministers …rich men..Ambani.. tata birla.. will stand like beggars with eternal shame on that day.. . … the true dignity and richness and honor will

be to know Christ! And the true horror to be unknown of Him!

Oh, happy shall that man be whose name was handed down from man to man amidst scorn, shame and spitting, because he took Christ’s part. “Stand back, you angels!” the King will say. “Stand back, you seraphim and cherubim! Make way for him! Honor him.. my faithful disciple… He loved Me in the days of My scorn. He suffered shame and humiliation for Me on earth. I know him. My Father, I confess him before You in heaven amidst the glories of My throne! I confess him before You—he is Mine.”

But the apostate, the turncoat, the careless, the non-confessing, whatever are their dignities, and names, and honors, and glories here—though the world’s may count them good and give padma bushan awards… and big tombs for them… if they have not confessed Christ on earth, it shall be all in vain! That eternal desitiner will say “I never knew you!”.. shame shame not puppy shame, but eternal shame…

You can grasp this only you understand glorious personhood of Christ.. he is so infinitely big… It would be hard to find a passage in the Bible where Jesus presents Himself in more exalted terms than in this one. He makes some remarkable claims about Himself in it. Think of it! . What calm simple and assured consciousness of His place as Judge underlies these words! His recognition is God’s acceptance.. results eternal glory; His denial is darkness and misery. I am so gloriously great son of God equal to God… unique son of God… confessing or denying me is not ordinary thing…. our eternal destiny hinges on whether or not He “confesses” us or “denies” us before the Father. This highlights the divine majesty and final authority of the One we are to confess before men.

In a similar passage, Jesus contrasted the greatness of His majesty with the wickedness of the age in which we are to testify of Him. He said, “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:38).

I am so glorious … holy and pure…I am son of God who have come to save this world which has gone away from worship God and worshiping all kinds idols… commiting adultery… and so fully depraved and sinful….. what is there to be ashamed of to confess me… in fact.. this world must be ashamed because it is adulterous generation.. instead of worshiping true God.. they are depraved and sinful… doing spiritual adultery having their own gods… and living in complete sin fully depraved… they will all be one day eternal ashamed…

If you are ashamed to confess me in this adulterous generation…. I will ashamed… Now think of that! How foolish it would be to be ashamed of the Lord of holiness and glory, before a generation that is adulterous and sinful! How foolish it would be to deny our Savior before men, when He promises to come in the glory of His Father with the holy angels!

If you see context from Mark 8: 35…..contenxt.. 35… what will man gain if he loses soul and gain world.. .… where is comparable worth if you lose your soul….. what will gain if you

lose your soul….. There will be a Great day of judgement.. .prophetic announcement…. He will come with all glory…. With retinue of angels.. he will sit on the throne… with all glory…. You know how you overcome that fear of man’s laugh and insult…… have this vision.. long term vision.. Look beyond your life… Go to the great day of judgement…. Which will decide your eternal destiny… You don’t want to be my true disciple but live in the fear of men… don’t want to proclaim my gospel before men.. and not confess… .. don’t think I am worthy of obedience…. you are ashamed of me.. living in a adultery generation…

Whatever keeps you in this generation full of spiritual adultery generation… if you are ashamed of me… go down to the last day… that day I will not just be a Jesus of Narazreth.. pleading to accept mercy…and repent.. but I will sit upon throne of glory…. I will be ashamed of you… You are ugly twised self centered sinner… depart from me… I am ashamed of you…say depart you cursed…into enteral fire..

This is vision long term that will help us overcome this fear… I believe we will be tempted to deny our Lord to the extent that we take our eyes off of Him, and focus on the hostilities and objections of people instead. And by contrast, we will be emboldened to confess Him to the extent that we take our eyes off men, and keep them focused on His divine majesty instead…. I think our focus is wrong.. stop looking at temporary men and look at eternal majestic Christ.

In fact, whole gospel of Matthew goal is that to show the majestic glory of King of Jews… and realize he has all authority in heaven and earth… it is call to us to submit ourselves to his kingship… to install Jesus Christ as king of kings in our hearts….. More Jesus reigns as king… more we will be able to overcome this terrible tryany of fear of men…

How crucial it is, then, that we remember the truth about our glorious Savior! How crucial it is that we keep our eyes on the glorious Son of God that we preach, and not on the men to whom we are to preach Him!

* * * * * * * * * *

As you can see, Jesus takes away all middle ground. We cannot be on both sides of the fence at once. If we belong to Jesus, then we must – we absolutely must – be willing confess ourselves as His before men!

* * * * * * * * * *

I can’t leave this subject without addressing one more question . . .

4. WHAT CAN WE DO IF WE HAVE NOT STOOD FOR HIM AS WE SHOULD?

We have to be honest. There have been many times when we have had the opportunity to profess Jesus as our Lord and Savior – many times when we have had the chance to take a bold stand for Him, or profess the truth about Him – but have failed to do so. We chickened sneaked out. We became afraid of men. And while we may not have openly “denied” Him, we have often refused to confess Him as clearly and as forthrightly and as actively as He has called us to.

What will happen to us? Will the Lord now deny us before the Father? No there is hope if we repent…. To give us encouragement that the Lord will forgive us.. he has given an apostle as an example..

The apostle Peter denied our Lord horribly. He had boasted that He would never deny the Lord. He said, “Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will not deny You” (Matthew 26:33). But it wasn’t long afterward that Peter denied Jesus. In fact, he denied Him three times. He didn’t just deny the Lord out of fear of men! He denied the Lord out of fear of little girl (vv. 69-71)!! He dared to curse and swear; saying with an oath, “I do not know the Man!” (v. 74).

Now given all that, what right would Peter have to expect that the Lord would confess Him before the Father? Wouldn’t Peter be right to expect the Lord of glory to look upon him and say, “Father, I do know know the man!” Could anyone do worse than Peter?

And yet, the clear testimony of the Scriptures is that the Lord forgave him. And when the Lord rose from the dead, the angel told the women at the tomb, “. . . Go, tell His disciples – and Peter – that He is going before you into Galilee . . .” (Mark 16:7); specifying the very disciple that had denied Him! Both Luke (Luke 24:34) and Paul (1 Corinthians 15:5) tell us that the Lord made a special post-resurrection appearance to Peter privately. Then the Bible tells us that Peter – this one who denied the Lord – went on, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to become a great leader of the early church, and eventually a martyr for Christ – being given the honor of being crucified for the Lord that He had, at one time, denied (John 21:18).

Here’s the point. Peter denied the Lord; but he didn’t live a life of continual denial of the Lord. He realized its sin.. and what did he do… he went out and what? “Wept bitterly.” His heart was broken He repented of his denial; and was forgiven wonderfully. He may have denied Him; but he repented and went on to confess Him.

* * * * * * * * * *

Have you denied Him before men? Then the thing to do is to confess your denial to Him, repent of your fear of men, and go on to confess Him faithfully. If He forgave Peter, He will certainly forgive you.

But better yet, let’s see to it that we never deny Him. Instead, let’s seize the opportunities He places before us; and trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit, let’s boldly confess Him before men as our Lord and Savior. And let’s remember His promise in 1 Samuel 2:30; that “those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.”

Do you confess Christ with your mouth? Do you confess Christ before men, no matter how hostile they are? And then do you confess Christ in your lifestyle by reaching out as He reached out? This is the hallmark of a true disciple.. without fear of men he will confess of Christ.. As his disciples, we should not just be coming on Sunday sitting hearing a sermon and going… We shouldn’t look at the world dying, going to hell around us and don’t have any concern, don’t seem to care they’re indifferent.

Does this have any weight any conscience… any trembling, any fear… You look at your life and you’re the only one that can really tell. “Let a man examine himself.” Are you willing to stand up and confess Jesus Christ? Or you ashamed that oh let Christ warn or promise anything… let preacher preach anything… however he wants… you either in hardness or proudness say…. it won’t touch me….. I have so many problems to deal with… may God have mercy on you…. In that day he says you will eternally be ashamed of you…..

Am I ashamed to read the Bible in public?

Am I ashamed to place a Bible on my desk at work?

Am I ashamed to pray with a brother or sister in public?

Am I ashamed to speak out on issues that matter to Jesus to strangers?

Am I ashamed to (ever) mention Jesus in a post on social media?

Am I ashamed to thank God when I announce anything to unbelievers what good thing happens?

Am I ashamed to post Christian contents in Facebook or whatapp group?

Am I ashamed to mention the name “Jesus” when I am with people who aren’t Christian?

Am I ashamed to communicate my disapproval when a colleague or friend blasphemes the name of Jesus?
